1. You need the most recent version of the client.
Installing WAR from the retail disks that came out 5 years ago is not going to cut it. You need version 1.4.8 which is the last version of the client released by Mythic. Even though the dev team will be using certain game mechanics from an earlier build, you still need the latest client.
There are 3 ways of getting this client:
1) If you were playing WAR up until it shutdown then you already have this version of the client. Congratulations!
2) Download the torrent from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=406
3) Download it from a file hosting site here: https://mega.co.nz/#!QAsnzKLR!MZbAcXWTP ... OV3_7XXJLw
Do not progress past this point until you are absolutely certain that you have the latest version of the client. If your not sure, go to the folder where you installed WAR and right click on "WAR.exe", then click on "Properties". In the window that opens click on the "Details" tab and then look for "File version". This should say "1.4.8.573". If your copy of "WAR.exe" does not have this file version then to back and do one of the 3 steps above again properly
.If you've downloaded a zip/rar file then extract all the files inside to the folder where you wish to run WAR from. Once all the game files are where you want and you're sure you have version 1.4.8.573 then you can continue.
2. Get the latest version of the launcher
For 32-bit operating systems (AKA "X86"): http://www.warhammer-server.com/dl/Launcher86.rar
For 64-bit operating systems (AKA "X64"): http://www.warhammer-server.com/dl/Launcher64.rar
Once you have downloaded the correct archive, extract the files straight into your WAR directory. When prompted, tell Windows to replace the existing "data.myp" file with the one in the archive. Your WAR directory should now have "Patcher.exe" listed alongside "WAR.exe", "warpatch.exe", etc, along with the new "data.myp" file.
Finally, right click on "Patcher.exe" and click on "Properties". Click the "Compatibility" tab on the window that opened up and then ensure "Run this program as an administrator" is checked. Once done, click OK.
3. Register an account
You have probably already done this already (it is the same as your forum account). If not, go to http://www.warhammer-server.com/register/ and follow the instructions. Remember that your username and password are both case sensitive.
4. Login via the launcher/patcher
Run "Patcher.exe" from the WAR folder (you can create a short-cut to it if you want). Enter the username and password that you used when registering on this website. Again, BOTH ARE CASE SENSITIVE. If your username was "Bob" then entering "bob" won't work. If your password was "Password1" (don't do that) then entering "password1" won't work.
Once both of those have been input, click the big "Play Now" button.
5. Success?
If the game loads up and puts you at the server select window then congratulations you're a winner. Stop reading and start bug testing. If you get error messages then double check you did everything right. The 4 step program to success is:
1) Latest client
2) Correct launcher with admin privilidges
3) Registered on warhammer-server.com
4) Login using the correct username and password
5) Success. See, 4 steps to get to Success
If it still doesn't work, reply here with the error messages that you're getting. Do not post until you have done everything here twice. And when you do post, don't go full retard like this guy did: viewtopic.php?f=54&t=339. Remember that everyone on this forum - including the devs - are volunteers who are doing this stuff in their own time.

Q: Why did you create this thread?
A: Because I was tired of seeing the same threads being made over and over again when all of the info is out there explaining what is needed. Rather than have it spread over multiple threads I figured having one place with all the info (and all the complaints of "it doesn't work") would stop the forum from getting so cluttered.

Q: Why doesn't this game support 64-bit Windows?
A: It does. You've probably done something wrong.
Q: Why is it all in French?
A: Because some of the client files were uploaded by French people. To change the language to English, right-click on "UserSettings.xml" in the "User" folder where you installed WAR and click edit. Find "<Language id="2" />" and change the 2 to 1. Save and run the client and you should be in English. (Thanks to Orcpacolypse for this one).
